An inmate at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center was found dead after a medical episode on Monday. Dimitri Sandoval Lira, 38, was found unresponsive in his cell around 8:40 a.m., and a deputy attempted life-saving measures, according to KSAT.
Inmate Lira was pronounced dead at 8:58 a.m. after deputies attempted to intervene. Officials said Lira "suffered a medical episode that may have been compounded by preexisting conditions," and the medical examiner will determine the cause of death, as reported by KENS 5. Lira was booked into Bexar County Jail on July 31 on charges of assault of a family or household member. This is the ninth death at the jail this year and the fifth in less than three months. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards was notified, and the sheriff's office reported regaining compliance on August 19.
The Bexar County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office is leading the investigation into Lira’s death, while the BCSO’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative review. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death and the events leading up to it.
