A bicyclist tragically lost their life on Sunday evening in Washington Park, following what appears to be a solo crash. Officers from the Central Precinct were dispatched at 6:27 p.m. to the intersection of Southwest Sacajawea Boulevard and Southwest Lewis and Clark Circle after a call reported the incident, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
The responding officers found that the bicyclist had already died by the time they arrived at the scene. The initial assessments suggest that the bicyclist lost control, which resulted in the fatal crash, and importantly, no vehicles are believed to have been involved in this incident. As part of standard procedure, the Portland Police Bureau's Major Crash Team is taking over to conduct a thorough investigation.
Due to the ongoing investigation, the area surrounding the accident site was closed to the public, which included the closure of nearby roads. Traffic diversions and closures often result in delays, so commuters were advised to seek alternative routes and exercise patience while the investigation team worked at the scene. The name of the deceased has not been released pending notification of their family.
Details about what may have caused the cyclist to lose control are still forthcoming as investigators piece together the events leading up to the tragic event. The community, meanwhile, is reminded of the inherent risks that come with navigating the blend of urban and nature-scapes that Portland offers. A follow-up announcement is expected as more information becomes available. The police have asked anyone with information about the crash to come forward and assist in shedding light on this unfortunate occurrence.
