Further details revealed by WCNC indicated that the cyclist, identified as Butler, and the Ford were both traveling south when the driver of the Ford failed to adequately reduce speed before striking Butler's bicycle. The collision ejected Butler from the bike, who was notably not wearing a helmet at the time of the impact. Charges against the driver are pending.
The aftermath of the accident was severe, resulting in Butler being airlifted to a hospital in Winston-Salem due to critical injuries sustained.
