Three boaters were met with unexpected distress off the shores of Laie Point yesterday, requiring rescue services after their vessel became powerless approximately half a mile out at sea. According to KHON2, the boating mishap unfolded around 4:44 p.m., when the boat's engine failed, and attempts to anchor it did not succeed, leaving the occupants adrift.

The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) was alerted to the situation and promptly dispatched the first unit within a mere 12 minutes of receiving a distress call. This was part of a larger response that included four units and 12 personnel detailed to the area to address the incident. Ocean Safety lifeguards subsequently engaged in a towing mission at around 5:10 p.m., as reported by Hawaii News Now, to prevent the 18-foot boat from colliding with the reef and to maneuver it towards safer waters near Kahana Bay Boat Ramp.

By 6 p.m., the HFD's Rescue 2 Boat reached the vessel, which was still adrift in waters that had a depth of approximately 70 feet. Taking over from the Ocean Safety lifeguards, the fire department's rescue boat began the task of transporting the disabled vessel towards the safety of the shore. No injuries were reported during the incident, a relief to all involved in the precarious situation. The boaters' ordeal concluded at 6:59 p.m., when the vessel, escorted securely by Ocean Safety, finally arrived at Kahana Bay Boat Ramp.
