In an effort to curb a spate of financial crimes, the Boston Police Department has issued a community alert for the Downtown, Back Bay, Fenway, and Seaport areas, where individuals have been targeted for cell phone thefts shortly after exiting bars and nightclubs. Thieves are preying on the nightlife crowd between 11:30 p.m. and 2:00 a.m., using tactics such as pickpocketing and deceit—posing offers for rides or assistance with photos, only to make off with unattended devices, as reported on the Boston Police Department's official website.

Predators have evolved their tactics; from classic pickpocketing to orchestrating ride share thefts, and even resorting to threats or violence. One prevalent trick includes "shoulder surfing"—spying over a victim's shoulder to steal their phone unlock code. Victims have also reported instances of thieves asking to borrow their phones for calls or to input contact or social media information. These incidents have led to unauthorized access to sensitive information and financial transactions, with numerous reports of criminals exploiting Apple ID accounts, Apple Pay, and applications such as Venmo, Cash App, PayPal, even cryptocurrency wallets, and sports betting platforms, like DraftKings.

The Boston Police Department is urging the public to exercise caution, recommending strong security settings for devices and advising against handing phones over to strangers. In the wake of these thefts, anyone with information on such crimes can forward their tips anonymously to the Boston Police CrimeStoppers. This can be done by calling 1-800-494-TIPS, texting "TIP" to CRIME (27463), or submitting information through their online platform. The BPD has reassured the public that identities will remain confidential for those assisting in investigations.

The department has also encouraged the submission of any related photos and videos, which can be sent anonymously through the CrimeStoppers program.
