The Boulder Police Department has recently filed charges against a local woman for harassing and retaliating against a City Council member. The incidents involve not only the public official but also two other individuals who fell victim to her outbursts. According to the City of Boulder, Laura Gonzalez, 38, faced felony retaliation against a judge or elected official and misdemeanor harassment charges.
The particular incident that led to these charges occurred on Wednesday on Canyon Boulevard. Gonzalez reportedly directed her anger towards Councilman Matt Benjamin over his recent votes and proceeded to physically push the other victim as they tried to leave the scene. In a previous encounter on August 21, another victim described being harassed by Gonzalez, who used a megaphone to deliver derogatory comments and taunts.
Gonzalez was taken into custody last night, according to Boulder police, and is currently held at the Boulder County jail. In a statement underscoring the gravity of these allegations, Boulder police have ensured to preserve the anonymity of the victims involved, citing their privacy due to being subjects of a crime.
