Earlier today, a fatal collision took place on I-95 in New Rochelle, resulting in the death of a box truck driver. ABC7NY reports the incident occurred just after midnight, near mile marker 6.1 on the southbound lanes. Authorities indicated that a 2026 Peterbilt tractor-trailer had slowed due to an active construction zone when it was struck from behind by a 2016 Hino box truck.
A statement obtained by ABC7NY confirmed that following the crash, the box truck caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames, with the driver being pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Peterbilt sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital. The identity of the deceased is withheld pending notification of next of kin.
News12 Westchester adds that the accident forced the closure of all southbound lanes of the highway, causing a significant traffic diversion at Exit 16. State police were on scene for hours, investigating and clearing the aftermath of the collision. Later, the lanes were reopened to the traffic fully.
