A Bronx man is facing serious charges after the local district attorney's office reports he opened fire in a crowded area, striking his target but thankfully not injuring bystanders. According to the Bronx District Attorney's Office, Kavon Burton, 31, is indicted on charges of Attempted Murder in the second degree along with a slew of assault and weapons offenses.
On a Sunday afternoon that turned suddenly violent, Burton allegedly engaged in an escalating confrontation with a 28-year-old man. "This defendant opened fire as people were enjoying their Sunday," Clark stated, emphasizing that such reckless endangerment of public safety is unacceptable. The indictment comes after the June 29 incident that left the victim wounded from gunshot injuries to the chest, as per the Bronx District Attorney's Office.
Authorities report the altercation and subsequent shooting were captured on surveillance footage at the intersection of McGraw and Metropolitan Avenues in Parkchester. The evidence allegedly shows Burton retrieving a firearm from a fanny pack and firing multiple shots. The victim began to follow him after a brief exchange, at which point Burton turned around and shot the victim. Burton was detained by law enforcement last month and is due back in court on November 12.
Clark has expressed gratitude towards the team working on the case, including Assistant District Attorney Sebastiano Mura of Trial Bureau 40 and NYPD Detective Perry Jean of the 43rd Precinct Squad, whose investigative efforts have contributed to the advancement of the prosecution. An arraignment was conducted by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Darlene Goldberg, during which the defendant's bail was continued.
