A Bronx man was handed a seven-year prison sentence for a shooting incident that resulted in injuries to two women aboard an MTA bus. The sentencing, announced by Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark, addresses the consequence of gunfire that mistakenly struck passengers instead of the intended target.
Anibal Colon, 47, accepted a plea deal, admitting to one count of Attempted Assault in the First Degree on July 30. "This defendant fired multiple shots from a handgun on a busy street in the middle of the day. One of those bullets shattered the window of a passing bus and seriously wounded a passenger in the shoulder," District Attorney Clark stated. Colon's action, which took place at approximately 3:20 p.m. on July 1, 2023, led to one woman suffering a life-altering shoulder injury, and another sustaining minor cuts from the shattered glass, as noted by the Bronx District Attorney's Office.
Colon faced justice in the Bronx Supreme Court where Justice Timothy Lewis imposed the sentenced. Furthermore, Colon will undergo five years of post-release supervision. The situation unfolded at the intersection of Union Avenue and East 156th Street when nine shots were fired from a 9 mm semi-automatic weapon. Although the intended target of the assault managed to escape unscathed, the stray bullet caused unintended harm, precipitating Colon’s arrest over two months later, on September 13, 2023.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Nitin Aradhya, a member of the Special Investigations Bureau, which operates under the leadership of Chief Craig Cecchini. They, in turn, report to Denise Kodjo, Deputy Chief of the Investigations Division and Wanda Perez-Maldonado, Chief of the Investigations Division. NYPD Detective Ivan Luciano, along with the 40th Precinct Detective Squad, played a pivotal role in the investigation, earning thanks from District Attorney Clark. All details regarding the sentencing were disclosed in a public release from the Bronx District Attorney's Office.
