The NYPD is currently seeking a man who is suspected of striking a 76-year-old woman with a white box truck, causing her severe injuries, in a hit-and-run incident in Brooklyn's Sheepshead Bay neighborhood. The collision occurred last Tuesday around 9:30 a.m., at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Avenue U, as Gothamist reported.
Despite an immediate call for witnesses and surveillance footage released of the suspect, the driver responsible for the trauma that left the elderly woman critically injured has yet to be apprehended. He is described as having worn an orange reflective construction shirt while driving away from the scene southbound on Ocean Avenue. An appeal was made by the NYPD for anyone with information to come forward, requesting individuals to reach out to the Crime Stoppers Hotline or submit tips on their website, according to Audacy.
The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was promptly transported by EMS to NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn. She suffered significant harm including, but not limited to, injuries to her face, neck, back, and legs, and she remains in critical condition.
Statistics provided by the NYPD indicate that there have been more than 125 pedestrian-involved traffic collisions within the 61st Precinct this year alone, which encompasses Sheepshead Bay, where the accident occurred. This number is notably down from the 150 reported at the same point last year. Data detailed by Gothamist also reflects a decline in fatalities, from seven to five year over year.
