The Humane Society of Broward County has been struck by a heart-wrenching incident, as a 10-week-old puppy named Pebbles was stolen from its shelter just before closing time last Friday. As reported by WSVN, the small, 10-pound puppy was in the process of recovering from parasites and ringworm and was taken from a secured kennel by an individual with a backpack.
Pebbles had recently returned from a medical foster home and hasn't yet fully recuperated, which raises concerns for her well-being. The shelter made public images of the suspect, his bike, and his backpack, hoping to gather information from people who may recognize him. The shelter also stated that Pebbles is microchipped, which allows her to be traced if she's brought to a vet clinic. In a statement obtained by WSVN, the shelter said, "In all our years, we have never experienced something this extreme, and our hearts are shattered."
Furthermore, a post on the shelter's Instagram account described the incident in detail, revealing Pebbles' delicate condition due to her recent treatments. The plea emphasized how crucial it is for the small puppy to continue receiving medical care, underlining the gravity of the situation.
The Humane Society has called upon the community to aid in their search and to spread awareness, in hopes of bringing Pebbles back safely. "We are asking the community to please spread the word, keep your eyes open, and help us bring Pebbles home," the shelter stated in their Instagram post. Following this incident, the Humane Society announced it would introduce a new no-large-bag policy for visitors entering kennel areas, aiming to prevent future thefts. Active investigations are underway as authorities and the shelter align efforts to ensure such an unprecedented event does not repeat itself.
