In a recent bulletin, the Burleson Police Department in Texas issued a warning about a prevalent scam cunningly masquerading as messages from the non-existent Texas Franchise Tax Board and TxDMV. In a social media post that served as a beacon for cybersecurity, they exposed the scam's red flags and offered guidance on identifying such deceptive tactics. The police department's message was clear: no legitimate government agency will text citizens demanding banking details or threatening immediate payment.
Residents have reported receiving texts with hyperlinks leading to fraudulent websites. These phony sites are elaborate facades designed with one goal in mind: to pilfer money and personal information from unsuspecting victims. Tactics used include creating a sense of urgency or intimidation through threats of dire consequences, such as suspending one's driver's license, or holding back tax refunds—tried-and-true manipulations wielded by scammers to ensnare their targets. In response, the Burleson Police Department has offered succinct advice: do not engage, click, or respond, but rather delete the message and report the phishing attempt to 7726 (SPAM).
Burleson PD also extends an invitation to the public for their Cybersecurity Awareness Event, aiming to fortify individuals against such digital predators. Scheduled for October 1st from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at the Burleson Public Library, the event promises to shed light on the various facets of cybersecurity. Officer V. Johnson of the Burleson Police Department will be the guest speaker, bringing expertise to those in attendance.
