Residents of Cabarrus County in North Carolina are in for a weeklong celebration of their waterways, thanks to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality's (NCDEQ) newly introduced Creek Week. From September 22 to 28, community members can immerse themselves in a slate of free events—all designed to foster awareness and encourage preservation of local aquatic environments.

The inaugural Creek Week, a collaborative effort led by the Cabarrus County Soil and Water Conservation and supported by local organizations, promises a diverse range of activities. These aim to include and educate participants of all ages, as confirmed in a recent announcement on Cabarrus County's official website. From an Aquatic Wild Workshop that kicks off the festivities on Sunday to a Community Creek Cleanup coinciding with World River Day, there's an opportunity for everyone to contribute to the health of their environment.

A highlight of the week is the Creek Week Festival, set for Saturday at Frank Liske Park, where attendees can partake in a creek stomp, kids fishing, ducky rescue, and paddle boating. The festival also features tabs from local environmental partners, educational raffles, and a continuation of the Community Art Upcycle Project. In the spirit of fun and learning, the event will conclude with a community creek cleanup behind the David W. Phillips Activity Center, emphasizing the significance of these waterways.

Residents looking to enjoy the great outdoors with a side of environmental education are encouraged to mark their calendars for movie nights featuring 'Finding Nemo' and 'Elementals', a water-themed trivia night, and a reflective frog walk complete with s'mores. Registration, while not mandatory for all events, is advisable for certain activities such as Movie Night at Frank Liske Park and the Frog Walk at Camp Spencer.

Subaru Concord, the River Protector sponsor of Creek Week, deserves special thanks for backing this initiative and emphasizing the importance of local waterway conservation.
