Mark Robert Eury, a 54-year-old resident of Catawba, N.C., faced the gavel and was handed an 11-year prison sentence followed by a five-year supervised release for his involvement in trafficking methamphetamine and illegal possession of a firearm. The announcement came from Russ Ferguson, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, who noted that this sentencing was a part of a broader effort named Operation Take Back America, targeting illicit substances and organized crime.

Documents presented in court and statements from the hearing revealed that Eury, previously having served prison time for an attempted trafficking conviction in April 2021, found himself in custody once again after a probation search on March 12, 2023, led to a disturbing discovery. Law enforcement officials unearthed over one and a half kilograms of methamphetamine, 47 grams of cocaine, and a loaded .38 caliber pistol among other items on Eury’s property. At that time, Eury was still bound by the conditions of his state probation.

A significant turnaround in this case occurred on March 12, when Eury entered a guilty plea for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of a firearm by a felon. Awaiting the designation of a federal facility, he is being held in federal custody as per a statement by the U.S. Department of Justice.

In a collaborative enforcement effort, Ferguson extended gratitude to the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, and the Division of Community Supervision of the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections. Their collective efforts underscore a commitment to combating the cycle of crime and drug distribution that plagues many corners of our nation.
