In the latest push to strengthen the US's position in nuclear energy, Centrus Energy Corp has laid out plans for a significant expansion of their uranium enrichment facility in Piketon, Ohio. This move is set to create roughly 300 new jobs at the plant and an additional 1,000 construction jobs in the process. The announcement has been well-received by local officials, with Ohio Governor Mike DeWine praising the project's ability to bolster both economic and national security.

The expansion, which is contingent on federal funding, aims to not only increase production of Low-Enriched Uranium (LEU) and High-Assay, Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) but also to reduce dependence on foreign entities for uranium enrichment technology. According to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, a statement by Centrus CEO Amir Vexler, "We are planning a historic, multi-billion-dollar investment right here in Ohio – supported by a nationwide supply chain to do just that."

This potential expansion follows Centrus's successful capital raising efforts, which included over $1.2 billion from convertible note transactions and more than $2 billion in contingent purchase commitments from utility customers globally. Their proposals to the U.S. Department of Energy, if accepted, would lead to a large-scale public and private investment aimed at installing thousands of additional centrifuges at their American Centrifuge Plant.

Underlining the project's national importance, U.S. Senator Jon Husted told Senator that, "Expanding our ability to enrich uranium here in Ohio will continue America’s legacy as the global leader in nuclear development." According to the Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's Office, Further, Centrus is recognized as the only active enricher using American technology and manufacturing their centrifuges exclusively in the US, a point of pride and strategic advantage in an industry dominated by foreign state-owned enterprises.

Supporting the workforce surge, JobsOhio and its Talent Acquisition Services team plan to coordinate with Centrus on recruitment and training initiatives. They look forward to a partnership that not only creates jobs but also maintains Ohio's influential role in America’s energy landscape. "Centrus’ Piketon uranium enrichment facility is one of a kind in the United States," said JobsOhio President and CEO J.P. Nauseef, according to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, affirming their critical role in securing the nation’s energy and security fronts.

The development in Piketon stands as both an economic boon for Southern Ohio and a strategic move to secure America's energy independence. Centrus has commenced hiring in anticipation of the expansion and will likely become a pivotal player in the country's push towards a carbon-free energy future.
