In a shocking series of events at Utah Valley University earlier this month, George Zinn was arrested after an attempt to intentionally mislead law enforcement during an active shooter situation. In the aftermath, a disturbing discovery was made when Zinn admitted to using his phone to engage in viewing and sharing child sexual abuse material (CSAM). According to the Utah County Sheriff's Office, Zinn was detained after falsely claiming to be the shooter in an effort to thwart the police response to the actual suspect.
The incident occurred on September 10th, as chaos unfolded during a shooting. Amidst the fleeing crowd, Zinn was heard proclaiming he had shot Charlie Kirk. The ruse was short-lived, as he was quickly taken into custody and later, during a medical episode, recanted his earlier statement, admitting to trying to hinder law enforcement's work. While being treated at the hospital, Zinn then voluntarily revealed to FBI and SBI Agents the presence of illicit material on his device, leading to a further investigation by the Utah County Special Victims Unit (SVU).
Following the acquisition of a search warrant for Zinn's phone on Monday, September 15th, investigators found over 20 images of minors in compromising positions, confirming Zinn's earlier confession. Officials have disclosed that these images included those of children between the ages of five and twelve. Zinn has since confessed to gaining "sexual gratification from viewing and sharing the CSAM images with others," with a chillingly specified "preferred victim age" range.
Zinn currently faces charges including "2nd Felony Obstruction of Justice" and "2nd Felony Sexual Exploitation of a Minor," where he stands accused on four counts. As the law catches up to him, Zinn remains in custody at the Utah County Jail. While there is currently no evidence to suggest that he colluded with the actual shooter, his false declaration during the incident has added to the serious charges he is now confronting.
