A sequence of events led to a standoff and a murder-suicide investigation in Stafford, where authorities are currently handling the aftermath of a violent confrontation that started last night. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Adrian Mercado, allegedly killed two individuals before ultimately taking his own life, as confirmed by local police.
According to a report by KPRC 2, the incident was first brought to the attention of Stafford Police when Mercado's father alerted them to a potential homicide committed by his son. Responding to the scene at the 13000 block of Lawrence Lane, officers were met with gunfire, with one bullet striking an officer's radio, leaving him physically unharmed. SWAT teams from Stafford, Missouri City, and Sugar Land, along with K9 units, drones, and flashbangs, were deployed as the suspect continued firing shots for nearly an hour and a half.
As the situation unfolded, law enforcement discovered two bodies: one in the backyard, wrapped in a blanket and concealed beneath plywood, and another inside the home, later identified as the suspect who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Mercado’s relationship to the victims remains unclear.
In the aftermath, the Stafford Police Department reflected on the resilience of their officers. "He actually stayed on scene for a while. he did not want to leave, he wanted to stick it through to the end," Stafford Police Lieutenant Luciano Lopez told ABC 13 in praise of the unharmed officer.
