Charlotte County's efforts to streamline its permitting process haven't gone unnoticed. The Community Development Department has snagged an Outstanding Achievement Award for its digital strides in the 2025 Government Experience Awards, hosted by the Center for Digital Government. By connecting the dots between the department’s existing Accela permitting system and the e-Recording platform of the Charlotte County Clerk of the Circuit Court & County Comptroller’s Office, they've paved the way for electronic submission and recording of notices of commencement.

Making a leap towards better service, the project which launched last year, has already chopped down permit wait times by half, as reported by Charlotte County's announcement. Intended to mitigate the previously required in-person visits to various offices, this digital integration has garnered praise for its sharp focus on efficiency and customer contentment, which also comes with environmental perks by slashing paper consumption.

"The collaboration between the Charlotte County Clerk of the Circuit Court and the Community Development Department reflects our commitment to innovative public service and efficiency," told Charlotte County Clerk of the Circuit Court Roger D. Eaton, as per Charlotte County's press release. This new system is celebrated not only for easing the administrative process for users but also stands as a testament to the potential of effective cross-agency cooperation.

With a modest outlay of $19,500 in consultancy services, this project not only trimmed down red tape but resonated as a prime example of judicious tech application. Plans are on the drawing board for expanding the reach of this system to encompass zoning permits as well, ensuring the project's palpable impact continues to bloom. Community Development Director Ben Bailey extolled the team's dedication, saying, "We’re honored to be named an Outstanding Achievement Winner in the 2025 Government Experience Awards. This recognition reflects our team’s commitment to creating accessible, equitable, and innovative digital services for our community," as Community Development shared.
