The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) is warning residents about a rise in fraudulent phone calls from individuals posing as CMPD officers. In Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Facebook post, scammers are using caller ID spoofing to display department phone numbers and are even using real officers’ names to appear credible.
These callers demand immediate payment or personal information and threaten arrest or legal action if their demands are not met. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department stated it will never call to demand payment, request personal information, or ask for payment through bitcoin, Cash App, gift cards, or wire transfers.
Anyone receiving a suspicious call is urged to hang up and verify the communication by calling CMPD’s non-emergency line at 311. Residents are advised to be cautious about unsolicited calls from anyone claiming to be law enforcement.
