An elderly woman has been severely injured following a dog attack in Chesterfield County, according to WSOCTV. The incident, which took place on Friday, left the 78-year-old with significant lacerations on her body, head, and neck. The attack reportedly occurred on Hunts Mill Road around 7 p.m.
Chesterfield County Deputies and Animal Control Officers quickly responded to the scene after receiving reports of the violent encounter. They discovered the owner of the dogs, Kathy Shami, had secured the animals by the time of their arrival, as stated in a WSOCTV report. The elderly woman was subsequently airlifted to a trauma center in Charlotte for specialized treatment.
As a consequence of the attack, the owner of the dogs, Kathy Shami, now faces charges related to the incident. According to WCNC, she has been charged with two counts of animal at large and two counts of rabies violation. Authorities have taken custody of the dogs, which were later transported to the Chesterfield County Animal Shelter.
"Our first priority is the safety of our citizens," Sheriff Cambo Streater emphasized in a statement published by WBTV. Streater continued by asserting the county's commitment to thorough investigation and legal handling of such incidents. Shami is expected to appear in Chesterfield County Court on Sept. 25 to answer to the charges levied against her.
