Chicago drivers can anticipate some navigational relief as the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) continues to progress with the Kennedy Expressway overhaul. According to reports by Chicago Sun-Times, the Kennedy Expressway's Armitage Avenue exit and the entrance at North Avenue were reopened last Sunday as IDOT moved toward the final stages of a multi-year, $169 million project aimed at rehabilitating 36 bridges and the thoroughfare from Ohio Street to the Edens junction.

Concurrently, the Damen Avenue exit ramp was shut down for repaving, a necessary inconvenience that is expected to culminate in a late October reopening. In a stitch of time, the re-openings follow restored lanes north of Addison Street on the expressway and the return of several ramps, including Kennedy to Kimball Avenue; Addison to outbound Kennedy; and outbound Kennedy to Pulaski/Irving Park Road, promising that the long-haunted streets by construction are witnessing the tail end of disruption.

Further ramp and lane re-openings on the outbound Kennedy have been underway, as showcased in early morning coverage by WGN-TV's Brhett Vickery, who presented a bird’s-eye view of the open lanes via SkyCam 9. The coverage was detailed by WGN-TV, with the report confirming the reopening of the outbound Kennedy ramp to Kimball Avenue; Addison Street to outbound Kennedy; and the outbound Kennedy ramp to Pulaski Road/Irving Park Road (Illinois 19). While the streets were temporarily restricted to a single lane during these changes, IDOT ensured that normal traffic resumed by the following 5 a.m. Wednesday.

The updated traffic pattern is another significant step in the project, aiming to bring the expressway close to a state of pre-construction normalcy by Thanksgiving. According to IDOT, the full scope of the Kennedy project, which kicked off in 2023, has managed to stay on target in spite of the often unpredictable nature of infrastructural revamps. However, drivers will need to hang tight a bit longer, as IDOT indicates ongoing closures, including the outbound Kennedy to Augusta Boulevard/Milwaukee Avenue, with a mid-October reopening targeted.

After the inbound lanes completion in 2023 and the express lanes in 2024, this year’s focus remains fixed on the outbound lanes. With a significant season’s workload being lifted, there lingers a sense of anticipation for the project's entire completion.
