Chicagoans woke up to a crisp, sunny Sunday as cooler temperatures made their presence known in the Windy City. According to a recent weather forecast, the high was set to hit near 68 degrees, with a light breeze shifting from west northwest to northeast in the afternoon. Yet, despite the slight chill, the skies remained clear, suggesting Fall's early murmurings within these northern climates.
But, dipping below the usual highs for early September, where temperatures average closer to 79 degrees, Fox 32 Meteorologist Mark Strehl explained the reason behind the unseasonable coolness. "That cold is due to a jet stream pulling in cool air from Northern Canada into the Great Lakes region," he told Fox 32 Chicago. Notwithstanding the chill, tonight's forecast is expected to be mostly clear with a low around 49 degrees, and the east wind calming down as the night progresses.
Yet, the week ahead looks promising for those longing for warmth. As Monday rolls around, residents can anticipate sunny skies with a high creeping up to around 73 degrees, and gentle south southwest winds may include gusts as high as 10 mph. Monday night will follow with a partly cloudy sky and mild temperatures in the mid-50s.
And indeed, stretching into the workweek, more traditional September warmth will return to the lakeside city. "Highs on Monday should reach around 75 degrees, around 79 on Tuesday with Wednesday possibly seeing a high of 80!" said Strehl. The skies will stay virtually dry, without a hint at possible rain through to the weekend. Perhaps an effort to savor the remnant of summer, nature itself ordains fairer days ahead for Chicago, with temperatures steadily ascending and basking the city in comforting sunlight.
