Newly released footage by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) captures the intense moments when Chicago police officers responded to a GameStop smash-and-grab on the Northwest Side. As reported by FOX 32 Chicago, the incident occurred around 4:26 a.m. on August 7, when suspects drove a vehicle into the storefront of the GameStop at 2929 W. Addison St., proceeding to burglarize the location.
When officers arrived, several suspects attempted to flee in both a sedan and an SUV, with one suspect's vehicle striking an officer. According to the same report, the injured officer, who was taken to a nearby hospital in good condition, then discharged their weapon. No one was injured by the gunfire. Following protocol, the officers involved were placed on administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days as the investigation proceeded, and no arrests have been made in relation to the burglary.
Additional details from the CBS News report present a more vivid picture of the scene that unfolded. As shown in body camera and dashboard camera footage, at least three individuals were seen scrambling into a red Jeep loaded with boxes, one of which tumbled out as they made their urgent escape. A white car was also captured speeding away, hitting an officer who then fired at least one shot.
The chase that ensued was abruptly ended by an unrelated car, which collided with police vehicles. CBS News reports no injuries stemming from this crash. Requests for additional information and video footage of the incident have been made by COPA, as the police officer's use of force is still under investigation. The officer who was hit by a car, treated for minor injuries, was identified as the shooter and has been reassigned to desk duty during the investigation. COPA urges anyone with information to come forward.
