Two women arrested in Collierville for alleged shoplifting have been identified as Romanian nationals, possibly connected to a larger regional theft ring. Action News 5 reported that the individuals were detained following a theft of over $3,500 worth of merchandise from a Kohl’s store yesterday. The report noted that the apprehended women had outstanding warrants in several states and were undocumented with ICE holds.
According to WREG, Collierville’s Special Enforcement Unit, while working another case were alerted to the shoplifting incident. They tracked the suspects to the Kohl's, which houses a Sephora makeup store, where police officers observed the theft of cosmetics from brands such as Fenty Beauty, Too Faced, and Estee Lauder. In a statement obtained by WREG, Collierville Police shared that the National Crime Information Center confirmed that the women had active warrants out of multiple states.
The incident is the latest in a pattern of thefts, following news last week where Germantown Police arrested two women from New Mexico for stealing more than $10,000 worth of merchandise in the Mid-South area. These events are painting a concerning picture of organized retail crime that transcends state lines. FOX13 Memphis noted that the women attempted to evade capture but were ultimately secured by police, adding another narrative thread to this unfolding situation.
While the full details of their alleged connection to the regional theft ring have not been disclosed, the arrests highlight ongoing challenges with theft rings and the necessary inter-state collaboration for law enforcement. Investigations are continuing, as authorities seek to understand the breadth and operation of this criminal network, all while grappling with the distinct, legal considerations involving undocumented individuals. With ICE holds in place, the women's legal journey is only just beginning, further complicating an already intricate web of juridical and enforcement issues. According to local police, the details regarding their alleged involvement remain to be fully revealed.
