The Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert for the Oakland, Bronzeville, and Hyde Park neighborhoods following a string of burglaries. According to the alert, the incidents occurred within the 2nd (Wentworth) District, with the burglar forcibly entering apartment buildings. The offender targeted vending and laundry machines, damaging them to steal the coins inside.
The burglaries spanned from August 5 to August 29, 2025, with several incidents reported on the 3600 block of South Lake Park Ave. in Oakland, and others on the 1000 block of East 41st Pl. and the 400 block of East 43rd St. in Bronzeville, as well as the 5200 block of South Blackstone Ave. in Hyde Park. The Chicago Police alert also includes a description of the suspected offender, describing him as an African-American male between 25-35 years old, and between 5'04" and 5'09" in height.
To counteract the burglaries, the Chicago Police Department advises residents to maintain well-lit property perimeters and to secure doors and windows. Suspicious activity should be reported immediately, and any damage to windows, doors, or locks should be promptly repaired. They further recommend the preservation of video surveillance footage, if available, for use by investigating detectives.
Residents who fall victim to such crimes are encouraged not to tamper with the crime scene and instead call the police at once. "If approached by a witness to the incident, request contact information," the official police statement advises.
