Fidel Ramirez-Mancilla, a 34-year-old Mexican national from Puebla, has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to illegally reentering the United States. U.S. District Judge Rolando Olvera handed down the sentence, and Ramirez-Mancilla is expected to face deportation proceedings after serving his term, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Ramirez-Mancilla was previously deported in December 2011 following a conviction for assault with intent to commit mayhem, rape, sodomy, or oral copulation. He was encountered by authorities near the Rio Grande on May 19, which led to his detention and new conviction for unlawful reentry, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Customs and Border Protection handled the investigation that led to Ramirez-Mancilla’s arrest and conviction, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Angel Castro prosecuting the case. The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a Justice Department program that aims to “repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime,” using resources from Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhoods.
