The longstanding TGI Fridays restaurant that has been a notable presence beside Coral Square Mall in Coral Springs has permanently shut down, ending its over twenty-year tenure in the community. This closure is indicative of the broader troubles facing the casual dining chain which, according to its Google business listing, has had to fold numerous locations in recent years due to changing consumer preferences and mounting industry pressures, as reported by Coral Springs Talk.
The once-popular restaurant at 855 N. University Dr. has closed, joining a growing list of the chain’s locations shutting down as changing dining habits weaken the company’s hold on the market; this is according to a report by TAP into Coral Springs. In a heartfelt note left by management, patrons were thanked for their support, "Thank you for the memories! This TGI Fridays location has proudly served the community for many wonderful years," highlighting the sense of communal loss felt in its wake.
At its zenith, TGI Fridays was a staple in the American casual dining scene, becoming synonymous with a spirited bar-and-grill experience. However, recent years saw a stark decline in the chain's footprint, evidenced by CNN's April report that less than 90 stores remained operational across the United States—a steep downturn from its previous count of around 270 locations at the onset of the last year, as relayed by TAP into Coral Springs.
The parent company of TGI Fridays filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2024, aiming to keep 164 locations open. However, restaurants like the Coral Springs location were not spared, as closures continue nationwide during the chain’s restructuring, highlighting its struggle to adapt to a changing market.
