In a recent series of recalls affecting various food products, Costco has now pulled over 3,300 pounds of its Kirkland Signature Ahi Wasabi Tuna Poke from shelves due to concerns over potential listeria contamination originating from green onions, as reported by NBC Chicago. Both the FDA and the distributor, Western United Fish Co., confirmed the voluntary recall following a positive test for Listeria monocytogenes by the green onion supplier, as announced on September 17.
The potentially tainted product, which sports a pack date of September 18, 2025, and a sell-by date of September 22, 2025, was available for purchase across the deli sections of Costco warehouse stores in 33 states, including but not limited to Illinois, New York, and California; this recall comes in the wake of a previous incident where Costco had to recall bottles of Kirkland-brand Prosecco over concerns of them spontaneously shattering. Those who have purchased the affected ahi tuna poke are urged to dispose of it immediately and visit their local Costco for a full refund, as instructed in a public notice from Costco, which emphasizes consumer safety: "Please stop using the product and dispose of it immediately," a precaution intended to prevent any risk to public health.
The bacterial pathogen in question, Listeria monocytogenes, can cause severe and possibly fatal infections in vulnerable groups such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, it can also result in serious complications for pregnant women, though healthy individuals may only experience temporary symptoms like high fever and abdominal pain; no related illnesses have been reported at this time, according to NBC News.
Foodborne illnesses associated with Listeria stand as a major public health concern, ranking as the third leading cause of death from such illnesses in the United States, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimating about 1,600 infections each year while previous instances of listeria outbreaks have led to hospitalizations and even fatalities with recalls from Fresh & Ready Foods LLC and Lyons Magnus highlighting the ongoing vigilance required to ensure consumer food safety.
