In a recent incident that underscores the ongoing issue of property crimes, Covington, Tennessee has seen an uptick in rather unconventional theft — pallet piracy. As reported by the Covington Tennessee Police Department (CPD) via a social media post, on the night of August 31, a couple was detained for attempting to steal wooden pallets from a Tractor Supply store. Officers were quick to arrive at the scene after being alerted by a commercial alarm at the establishment located at 975 Hwy 51 North.
Upon their arrival, CPD officers spotted a black and tan 1997 Ford F150 truck attempting to quickly leave the store's rear parking lot. This vehicle, they recognized, was believed to be involved in earlier thefts at the same location. The truck, along with the attached trailer, was conspicuously missing functional running lights, giving the officers ample reason to initiate a stop and subsequently investigate further. They managed to quickly apprehend Tavares Washington, 48, and Tara Washington, 47, both residents of Cordova, TN.
During the stop, the Washingtons claimed they had permission from the store manager to take the wooden pallets. However, upon verification with the Tractor Supply manager, it was confirmed that the duo did not have such an authorization. CPD's detectives have linked the vehicle and the suspects to at least four separate incidences involving over 400 pallets. This ongoing investigation hints at an audacious string of thefts stretching back to earlier incidents.
Tavares Washington has been charged with Theft of Property over $10,000.00 and faces a bond set at $5,000.00. He is scheduled to appear before Judge M.O Eckel III in Tipton County General Sessions Court later in September. Chief Donna Turner lauded her department's "quick response and attentiveness," mentioning it "prevented a theft and further loss to Tractor Supply." She added, "The Covington Police Department remains committed to protecting our community and supporting our local merchants," indicating the possibility of other similar thefts in the area being connected to the apprehended individuals, as per the Covington Tennessee Police Department.
