A Dallas man, Trevis Williams, age 46, entered a guilty plea for breaching federal firearm laws after attempting to board a plane with a loaded gun. Officials stated Williams was caught with a Glock Model 30, .45 caliber, semi-automatic pistol, and nine rounds of ammunition in his carry-on at Louis Armstrong International Airport last March 16, the U.S. Attorney's Office of the Eastern District of Louisiana announced.
Per the investigation led by the FBI, a TSA agent first spotted the weapon during routine security checks, leading to involvement from local law enforcement and federal agencies. It surfaced that Williams, tried before and convicted in a felony case, had no legal right to possess the firearm and ammunition. After the discovery, the TSA agent alerted the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and the FBI, who confirmed the violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(8), as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Williams now faces serious consequences, including the potential of a fifteen year maximum jail sentence and a fine reaching up to $250,000. U.S. District Judge Sarah S. Vance has scheduled the sentencing for December 16th, as revealed in court documents. "Williams faces a maximum term of imprisonment of fifteen years, a fine of up to $250,000, up to three years of supervised release after imprisonment, and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee," according to a press release by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
This transgression has been linked to Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a collaborative initiative aimed at reducing violent crimes and gun violence by uniting law enforcement with the communities they serve. Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson commended the cooperative efforts of the Transportation Security Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in their investigation of this matter. Assistant United States Attorney Jon Maestri of the General Crimes Unit, praised by Simpson, is at the helm of the prosecution, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.
