The DeKalb County Jail is facing scrutiny once again with the report of a seventh inmate death this year. Larynz Redd, a 27-year-old from Decatur, was found unresponsive in his cell last Saturday morning and was pronounced dead despite efforts from jail medical staff and DeKalb EMS, as stated by the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office. FOX5 Atlanta reports this as the seventh in-custody death to occur at the facility in 2025.
Held since May 2024, Redd's death is currently under investigation with no signs of foul play identified at this point. According to Decaturish, Sheriff Melody M. Maddox expressed that the care and safety of individuals in custody are priorities, stating, "The DeKalb Sheriff’s Office is deeply concerned about the death of any individual in our custody." Notably, this incident follows the first inmate death reported in February and is the sixth death since June 1.
The string of in-custody deaths has raised questions about the conditions and management at the DeKalb County Jail. In her statement obtained by Decaturish, Sheriff Maddox highlighted an ongoing commitment to improving jail conditions to help prevent such incidents, though detailed plans or actions have not been publicly shared.
Despite the alarming frequency of these incidents, Maddox has declined interview requests on the matter of deaths in the jail. Providing a brief insight through written responses only, the Sheriff's Office has stated that all cases of death are thoroughly investigated, while their operations team is tasked with improving conditions.
