Earlier this morning, Downtown Boston's streets became the backdrop for a significant arrest involving multiple firearm and motor vehicle violations. According to the Boston Police Department, Joseph Johnson, a 46-year-old resident of Stoughton, now faces a litany of charges after being pulled over by officers from District A-1.
Patrolling Oak Street at around 1:25 AM, officers witnessed Johnson's vehicle blatantly ignore a red light at Washington Street, driving around a stopped vehicle before continuing this pattern through subsequent traffic signals. Their emergency lights and sirens were activated, attempting a traffic stop that would end, seen driving around another stopped vehicle, in Johnson's detainment. Upon approaching his vehicle, officers described smelling a combination of alcohol and burnt marijuana, leading to further interrogation of Johnson's conduct.
Officers' suspicions only deepened after Johnson, under an exit order, removed a substantial bag of marijuana from his front pocket, appearing visibly unsteady. Heightening the gravity of the situation, a loaded Glock 9mm handgun was discovered during a motor vehicle inventory search, filled with seven rounds in the magazine.
Brought into custody, Johnson is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court, facing numerous charges including carrying a firearm without a license, for the third time, as well as being intoxicated while in possession of a loaded weapon. Besides the firearm-related accusations, Johnson also contends with vehicular offenses like operating under the influence and negligent vehicle operation, including three counts of failure to stop/yield, said the vehicle, which also contained a firearm violation.
The serious nature of the offenses, detailed by Boston Police, suggests a troubling disregard for both public safety and legal requirements. Johnson has been charged with carrying a firearm without a license (3rd offense), possession of ammunition without an FID card (subsequent offense), and several other firearm-related charges alongside his vehicular violations.
