A Medway bakery famous for muffins that locals swear beat the old Jordan Marsh recipe has just planted its flag in Canton. Muffin House Cafe opened its seventh location in late August in the Cobb Corner shopping corridor.
The Canton opening was reported by the Franklin Observer, which reported that Muffin House Cafe was adding a seventh location in Canton. The bakery has locations in Medway, Mendon, Natick, Hopkinton and Westwood, and has expanded to Canton.
A New Outdoor Patio
The Canton buildout did more than swap signage. The Franklin Observer's shorter description mentions muffins, pastries and breakfast fare.
Construction and buildout work went into converting fast-food infrastructure into sit-down cafe seating.
A Family Recipe Going Back To Chelsea
The bakery's roots trace back decades before the Canton lease. Founder Sheldon Strasnick got his start in baking at age 10 in his father's bakery, where he used to fall asleep on flour bags, according to CBS News. Muffin House Cafe opened its first location in Medway in 2014. Sheldon Strasnick owns the company, and Joshua Strasnick is a family member involved in the business.
That family history helped shape the bakery's signature product. Muffin House Cafe built its regional reputation on blueberry muffins marketed as “Better than Jordan Marsh,” a nod to the tearoom-style muffins once famous at the old Boston department store, according to VisitingNewEngland. Jordan Marsh's sugar-crusted muffins were a fixture across New England for decades, and the chain's former stores have left a nostalgia gap.
Steady Growth Across Norfolk County
Canton is only the latest stop in a growth pattern that has played out town by town. Before Canton, Muffin House Cafe opened its sixth eastern Massachusetts location at 907 Main Street in downtown Walpole in May 2024.
