A fatal accident occurred on Interstate 5 late Saturday evening after a driver who evaded a Portland traffic stop was struck and killed, according to local authorities. The incident began when officers from the Portland Police Bureau's North Precinct attempted to pull over a vehicle on North Rosa Parks Way around 11:00 p.m., only for the driver to flee the scene and subsequently crash near the I-5 southbound on-ramp at North Rosa Parks Way.
Following the crash, the adult male driver exited his vehicle and attempted to cross I-5's southbound lanes toward the northbound direction when he was hit by an oncoming vehicle, as detailed in a statement from the Portland Police Bureau. The driver who was involved in the collision stopped and has been actively cooperating with the police investigation, which has subsequently been taken over by the PPB's Major Crash Team (MCT).
As a result of the investigation, both directions of I-5 were subject to closure, with northbound lanes shut down between North Killingsworth Street and North Rosa Parks Way, and the southbound lanes between North Lombard Street and North Killingsworth Street, impacting the weekend traffic pattern and causing substantial detours for late-night travelers in the area.
The Portland Police Bureau has issued a call to the public for any information regarding the incident and has provided a police email to receive crime tips. They are seeking help, specifically addressed to the Traffic Investigations Unit with the reference case number 25-245427. The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin, and it is unclear at this time whether any charges will be pressed in relation to the fatal occurrence.
