A recent shooting incident in Duluth has escalated to a police confrontation involving multiple squad cars and a K-9 unit. According to a report from the Duluth Police Department, on Wednesday night, a man now identified as 36-year-old Demetrius Norwood discharged a firearm at an individual inside a vehicle in the 500 block of North 57th Avenue West. The incident, which took place at around 11:15 p.m., fortunately resulted in no physical injuries to the person targeted.
As detailed by official statements from the Duluth Police Department, Norwood, after initially fleeing the scene, shockingly returned and used his vehicle to ram into two parked police cruisers, one of which contained a K-9. Neither the police officers present nor the police dog sustained injuries during this aggressive act. This confrontation led to the prompt arrest of Norwood by Duluth police officers.
With a reportedly extensive criminal background, Norwood is no stranger to local law enforcement. He is now facing pending charges that include 2nd Degree Assault and Reckless Discharge of a Firearm. Additionally, being recognized as a felon, Norwood is charged with illegal possession of a firearm, among other allegations.
Norwood was taken into custody without further incident, although the sequence of events underscores a moment of intense danger for those involved, including the resident of a tranquil suburban street who suddenly found themselves at the barrel of a gun. The Duluth Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to this confrontation and the motivations of the shooter. More information will follow as authorities process the scene and legal proceedings commence.
