Residents of Durham were put on edge after two separate instances of gunfire damaged SUVs within a mere day of each other, raising concerns about safety in a normally quiet community.
According to reports by CBS17, the latest incident occurred yesterday on East Pettigrew Street, close to South Briggs Avenue. A woman and two children, aged 8 and 11, were inside an SUV when it was showered with bullets around 2:30 p.m. The vehicle was hit but, fortunately, no injuries were reported. The police found at least 24 bullet casings at the scene, a shocking testament to the violence unleashed in daylight.
Less than 24 hours earlier, on Tuesday, another shooting took place on Larchwood Drive near Fayetteville Road, as confirmed by WRAL. In this attack, a man and a woman were shot in their vehicle, resulting in life-threatening injuries for the man and less severe injuries for the woman. Nearby residents, including Ruth Fuller, experienced the terrifying moments firsthand, with Fuller recounting to WRAL, "Bullets don't have a name, and it very easily could've hit one of them or myself."
Bishop Darion White of the Victorious Life Fellowship Church, who witnessed the aftermath of the Larchwood Drive shooting, told CBS17, "I heard a barrage of gunfire." He revealed his concern for the victims and emphasized the importance of community care in these troubling times. Meanwhile, Ruth Fuller's struggles continued as she and her daughter lamented the presence of a "crime car" left outside their home, which served as an unwanted reminder of the violence that had unfolded, CBS17 reported.
The Durham Police Department has not yet identified any suspects or motives behind the shootings, as the investigation continues. The community, still reeling from the violence, seeks answers and hopes for a return to the safety it once knew, according to ABC11's interviews with traumatized locals.
