The Durham Crisis Response Center (DCRC), which has supported victims of domestic and sexual violence for more than 40 years, is recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October with a series of events aimed at raising awareness and supporting survivors. According to a recent social media post from Durham County Government, the DCRC will begin its observance with the annual "Reading of the Names," an event that honors individuals who lost their lives to domestic violence over the past year. The reading will be followed by a silent walk, scheduled for Friday at 8:30 a.m. at the Durham Family Justice Center.

Leadership from across Durham will participate in the ceremony, including Mayor Leonardo Williams, Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead, Police Chief Patrice Andrews, District Attorney Satana Deberry, and Shana Carignan, the DCRC's Executive Director. The ceremony is scheduled as a time for reflection and remembrance, providing an opportunity for the community to acknowledge the impact of domestic violence. The DCRC maintains a 24-hour help line for individuals in crisis.

In addition to remembering victims, the DCRC is also hosting "Survive & Thrive," a community event designed to empower survivors of domestic violence through shared stories and partnership with local support organizations. On Oct. 24 from 12-3 p.m. at the Main Library on N. Roxboro Street, survivors are invited to share their journeys, and guests can experience a Dress for Success fashion show among other activities. Over 25 community organizations, in collaboration with the Durham County Department of Public Health and Alliance Health, will be participating to offer resources and bolster support networks, as reported by Durham County.

As shared by the DCRC in the same social media post, the goal is to work with the community to end domestic, sexual, and family violence and human trafficking through a comprehensive approach that includes advocacy, education, support, and prevention.
