In a case out of East Harlem, Kristie Miro has pleaded guilty to the murder of her aunt, Ana Nieves, following an incident involving family violence that resulted in her aunt's death. The admission came before the New York State Supreme Court, with Miro agreeing to one count of Murder in the Second Degree. She is slated for sentencing on November 12, with a proposed term of 16 years-to-life in state prison, as detailed by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.

The fatal incident occurred after discussions about Miro’s tenancy in her aunt’s apartment intensified following the end of a personal relationship. Court documents state that on the day of the incident, Miro met with her cousin while holding a hammer. Later, both Miro’s cousin and Ana Nieves attended a party together but left separately. Ana Nieves did not return home, and concerns arose the following day when attempts to contact her were unsuccessful.

Law enforcement conducted a wellness check on the afternoon of February 11 after a building resident raised concerns and Ms. Nieves’ niece was unable to reach her. When police arrived, Miro answered the door and stated that her aunt was not home, despite previous disputes. NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit then made a forced entry and discovered Ms. Nieves deceased in the bathtub, wearing the bloodstained clothes she was last seen in. A hammer, along with blood-soaked clothing and cleaning gloves, was found in Miro’s bedroom.

Miro was arrested on February 13, 2022. The prosecution team consists of Assistant District Attorneys Joel Seidemann and Michael Perez, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Erin Tierney and Executive District Attorney Lisa DelPizzo. District Attorney Bragg acknowledged the important role played by the NYPD, specifically highlighting the contributions of Detective Sean Degnan and officers from the 23rd Precinct.
