A tragic series of events unfolded last Saturday in East Houston when a 10-year-old was critically wounded by gunfire. The child had been reportedly knocking on people's doors in the area of the 9700 block of Mimbrough St. late into the night. According to CBS Austin, the shooting occurred around 10:55 p.m., and the Houston Police Department confirmed one person was detained for questioning in relation to the incident.
Not far away, in an eerily similar occurrence, another young life was claimed by senseless violence, after being shot during a seemingly innocent game of "ding-dong-ditch". The 11-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries following the late-night incident on the 9700 block of Racine Street, a detail which a witness who saw the child running from a home was shot. The Houston Police Department has identified a possible suspect who is currently in custody, as detailed by FOX 26 Houston.
Responding to the second shooting, officers from the Northeast Patrol Division arrived a little before 11 p.m. last Saturday to find the 11-year-old boy critically wounded. Sergeant Michael Cass with the Houston Police Department said in a statement obtained by FOX 26 Houston, "The boy was transferred to the hospital around 11:30 p.m. last night." Unfortunately, the child did not survive, passing away from the gunshot wound as reported later on Sunday.
While a possible suspect has been detained, the identity of the individual has not been released to the public as of yet. Following the detainment, police released the person initially questioned but continue to seek information that could shed light on these tragedies. The community is urged to come forward with any relevant information, and can reach out to the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477). These ongoing investigations aim to provide some semblance of justice for the young victims and their grieving families.
