In a recent multi-agency law enforcement operation, El Paso County Sheriff's deputies made a major narcotic bust following a traffic stop on Interstate 25. During the Beat Auto Theft Through Law Enforcement (BATTLE) operation on August 18, the sheriff's office reported spotting a Chevy Sonic with an expired and mismatched license plate. This discrepancy ultimately led to a significant breakthrough in drug discovery.

Deputies attempted to routinely pull over the vehicle, driven by 26-year-old Jorge Hernandez Ornelas, who was unable to duly present a driver’s license. Their suspicions quickly escalated upon noting contradictions in Hernandez Ornelas's account of his whereabouts and intentions. A K-9 unit was called in to swiftly conduct an open-air narcotics sniff, leading to a deeper investigation of the car.

According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, the vehicle had been altered specifically to smuggle and hide large quantities of drugs. A search revealed four pounds of methamphetamine, concealed within the vehicle. Hernandez Ornelas admitted to possessing the narcotics and was subsequently arrested and booked into the El Paso County Jail.

Charges against Hernandez Ornelas include unlawful distribution and manufacture of a controlled substance, along with fictitious numbers on plates, among others. He is being held on a $50,000 bond. Sheriff Joseph Roybal highlighted the significance of this arrest, stating, "This case underscores the importance of strong partnerships and proactive law enforcement efforts in the Pikes Peak region," as shared in a statement by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office
