An illegal encampment situated beneath Chamberlin S bridge, at the crux of Chamberlin S and Tanager Way, was dismantled last Thursday, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. El Paso's Sheriff's Office, alongside the County Department of Public Works, initiated the clean-up after a report by the County Code Enforcement on September 9. While no individuals were present at the first discovery, items like a large hunting knife and drug paraphernalia were swiftly collected and are set to be destroyed. Notices to vacate, which curiously included a list of resources for the homeless, were posted in the area.
Subsequent incidents highlighted the encampment's problematic location, including a disturbance on September 10 where a woman suspected of intoxication was reportedly seen beneath the bridge, which stands alarmingly close to a school bus stop. On September 16, deputies returned to post updated notices, now warning that any individuals remaining would soon have to properly contend with charges for Unauthorized Camping on Public Property and Obstruction.
The final eviction transpired on September 18, with deputies ensuring the area was vacated before Public Works crews began their restoration work. Two more individuals were found at the site, but they left without resistance. Sheriff Joseph Roybal emphasized the balance of firmness and care, stating, "While we will not tolerate illegal activity on public property, our deputies approach these situations with professionalism and compassion, ensuring individuals are offered resources and information before enforcement action is taken," as per the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
