A tragic accident on Clanton Road in Charlotte's Westover Division claimed the life of a 65-year-old woman this Monday. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reports that Meta Howze King was struck by a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado around 3:14 p.m. and was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital.
The driver, identified as 54-year-old Floyd Tyrone Bankhead, stayed at the scene and cooperated with the officers who responded to the "accident with personal injury call for service near the 1200 block of Clanton Road" as CMPD's statement describes, there were no immediate signs of impairment from Bankhead, but the investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing; likewise, there's no suspicion of impairment for Ms. King, however, toxicology results are still pending. The truck involved was seen stopped near the victim, pulling a trailer at the time of the incident.
CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit, alongside the Crime Scene Search team, has taken charge of the investigation to unravel the series of events leading to the death of Ms. King. Any witnesses or individuals with information have been encouraged to come forward to assist with the inquiry.
