A tragic event unfolded in the small McLean County village of Saybrook, where a house fire claimed the life of an elderly woman. Authorities have identified the victim as Carol D. Purcell, 72, who was found deceased following the extinguishing of the fire. According to a report by 25NewsNow, McLean County Coroner Kathy Yoder released a statement confirming the preliminary autopsy results, which suggest Purcell died from "probable carbon monoxide intoxication after inhaling smoke and soot".
Details surrounding the incident were sparse, as the investigative efforts by the McLean County Sheriff's Office, Coroner's Office, and the Office of the State Fire Marshal are ongoing. McLean County Sheriff’s deputies had arrived at Purcell’s residence, situated in the 300 block of West Oak Street, with multiple rural fire departments already working to control the blaze. It was after the fire's suppression that Purcell’s body was discovered inside the home. As outlined by Central Illinois Proud, toxicology testing has been conducted in accordance with state law, though the results of this testing are still pending.
This story's development will undoubtedly continue to unfold as the investigative bodies press forward in their search for answers.
