The Kaua‘i Fire Department responded promptly on Tuesday to an electrical incident involving ruptured solar energy storage batteries at a residence on Hekili Road in Kapa‘a. No injuries were reported. "Residents are urged to ensure that any electrical work, solar panels, and battery storage systems are properly installed by a licensed contractor, and that periodic maintenance is performed in accordance with manufacturer instructions," advised KFD Chief Michael Gibson, as reported by Kaua‘i County.

Responders from the Kaiākea fire station, an on-duty Battalion Chief, and personnel from the Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative collaborated to address the situation after approximately 106 nickel-ion batteries began failing due to age-related issues. At the scene, firefighters found no smoke or fire but proceeded to shut off the residence's power as a precaution. Specialized testing equipment indicated that air quality levels remained well below harm's threshold, despite the minor bursts from the batteries.

The incident led to further action with the Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative's electrician cutting off power to the entire property. The Department of Health became involved on Tuesday, tasked with the proper disposal of the compromised batteries. Following their guidance and that of the Environmental Protection Agency, self-evacuation recommendations were issued to residents of the primary and adjacent homes as a safety measure. According to official statements, KFD personnel took the precaution of advising around five to six homes to self-evacuate.

With Fire Prevention Week scheduled from October 5–11, themed "Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home." Kaua‘i communities will have upcoming opportunities to learn more about these safety measures, with a news release on the kick-off event expected soon. In the meantime, firefighters will continue to monitor air quality in the affected area and maintain safety protocols for local residents, as per the press release.
