Elk Grove High School in Sacramento has found itself at the center of a disturbing hazing scandal involving members of its varsity football team. The Sacramento Bee obtained a video that shows three varsity players engaging in what has been described as "sexualized hazing" of a freshman student in the school's locker room. The video, which circulated on social media before being deleted, captures the older students forcing the underclassman into simulated sex acts, as other teammates can be heard cheering on.
The fallout from the video's exposure was swift, leading to the suspension of the team members involved for breaches of the school's conduct policies, as reported by Athletic Business. The accused did not participate in the season opener following the incident. Further fleshing out the response, Elk Grove High School Principal Rudy Ortega communicated directly with parents and guardians. "We are writing to inform you of a matter that requires our collective attention and action," Ortega said, emphasizing the need for a respectful and inclusive school environment.
Authorities from the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department have disclosed there is no current evidence of a sex crime, despite the video's implications. However, hazing expert Todd Shelton, executive director of the Hazing Prevention Network, emphasized the seriousness of such incidents. "There can be sexual assault that is part of a hazing incident — one does not exclude the other," Shelton told The Sacramento Bee. He also noted that while sexualized hazing is often associated with college fraternities, it is increasingly being observed at the high school level.
In response to the controversy, the school has adopted new policies to deter future incidents, including mandatory adult supervision in locker rooms. These measures accompany a broader review of "locker room culture and student-athlete conduct," as stated in the Athletic Business report. Ortega appealed to the Elk Grove community for support in reinforcing core values, saying, "This is a critical moment for reflection, growth, and accountability, not only for the individuals involved but for our athletic program as a whole."
