Tragedy struck in Englewood as a 6-month-old baby girl was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead in what is now a homicide investigation. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Kloe Sophia Bastos Bastillos' mother discovered her face down on her mattress late Saturday night on the 7200 block of South Winchester Avenue.
The mother turned her over to find a pale blue face, and the infant was not breathing. In a scramble of desperation and hope, the baby's father called 911 and placed Kloe into her stroller while they awaited help. The police report, as indicated in the Sun-Times, mentioned that the child had suffered a skull fracture.
Paramedics attempted life-saving measures, but to no avail. Kloe was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where the finality of her short life was pronounced at 11:46 p.m. An autopsy following the tragic event ruled her death a result of multiple injuries from child abuse, sealing her fate in the grim lexicon of homicides.
ABC 7 Chicago reports detail that the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the baby as Kloe Bastos Castillos. Details surrounding the moments leading up to this heartbreaking scene are sparse, with police not yet taking anyone into custody. Area 1 detectives are deeply engrossed in their investigation into the events that ended this infant’s life.
