A high pressure natural gas leak was reported at a construction site in Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw, prompting an evacuation of nearby residents on Wednesday morning. Los Angeles Fire Department units responded to the incident at 5480 W Village Green at approximately 10:11 AM. According to LAFD alerts, no injuries were reported, and emergency crews set to work to locate and isolate the leak. The precautions taken included the evacuation of five units in the adjacent two-story apartment building.
Further investigation by the fire department and SoCal Gas, which had been quickly deployed to the scene, revealed the source of the danger to be a 1" gas pipe. Despite the alarming potential such a leak could represent, meter readings around the impacted building were low, suggesting no immediate threat. "All residents were safely and efficiently evacuated out of an abundance of caution," the LAFD updated in a subsequent notification. The situation was described as static, with SoCal Gas supervising and coordinating efforts to terminate the leak.
The gas leak caused some local disruption, but officials managed to prevent any injuries or further risk to public safety. Swift action by the LAFD and SoCal Gas appears to have mitigated what could have otherwise escalated into a far more serious community hazard. The LAFD has not anticipated further updates, indicating confidence that the incident is well in hand.
