The trial of former Phoenix Police officer Germayne Cunningham and his wife, Lisa Cunningham, for the alleged murder of their 7-year-old daughter, Sanaa Cunningham, commenced on Sept. 24, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix. The couple faces 11 counts of child abuse and first-degree murder, challenging the assertions of the defense that the child was dealing with severe mental health issues.
Graphic content shown in court demonstrates Sanaa's descent into a dire state of health, under the care of her father, a former detective, and stepmother. The Cunninghams had reportedly cycled her through multiple doctors who diagnosed her with an unspecified schizophrenia spectrum disorder, as she began self-harming and struggling with eating. Despite medical advice suggesting inpatient care, the state has accused the couple of favoring home remedies, FOX 10 reports. Over the course of the proceedings, an 18-person jury was subjected to distressing images of the child, including instances where she was confined in a laundry room with minimally humane conditions.
Prosecutors painted a grim picture of neglect, including allegations that the Cunninghams delayed seeking proper medical treatment for Sanaa, leading to her death from sepsis complications, as detailed in an AZ Family report. Indeed, the gruesome details extend to Sanaa being zip-tied to a water container and isolated in various ways. Upon her death, an autopsy could not conclusively determine the manner of death.
In response to the onslaught of accusations, Germayne Cunningham's defense emphasizes the father's reliance on medical advice for Sanaa's complex health conditions. Natalee Segal, Cunningham's defense attorney, argued, "Germayne Cunningham did not intentionally or knowingly delay medical care for his daughter. He did not murder her,” according to statements obtained by AZ Family. The defense also highlighted the unfortunate misdiagnosis of a "silent infection" by medical professionals, which they claim is the true cause of Sanaa's sudden and tragic demise.
The trial, anticipated to extend until the end of March 2026, is set to feature a wide array of testimonies, from family to medical staff to child safety officials. Lisa Cunningham’s defense team was scheduled to deliver their opening statement on Sept. 25, as per FOX 10. With the death penalty ruled out for the couple, further proceedings will likely unpack the complexity of Sanaa's medical history and the actions, or lack thereof, taken by her parents before her untimely and contentious death.
