Falcon Field Airport in Mesa is on the ascent, securing federal grants aimed at boosting the airport's operational capacity and safety. According to the City of Mesa, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has doled out a series of grants to the airport, to initiate design on several infrastructure projects.

The main chunk of change, a $363,485 grant, will be utilized to quickly design a new Taxiway I and a holding apron for Runway 22L. Not to be overshadowed, the airport also snagged an $85,918 grant to design the reconstruction of the West Airport Service Road. This road is crucial since it connects the northern and southern spans of the field, thereby addressing ground transportation demands. A third grant of $206,082 is set to fund design overhauls of a connecting taxiway and an apron taxiway, with a local grant match of $16,772 thanks to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). Corinne Nystrom, A.A.E., the Airport Director, expressed in a statement made by the City of Mesa, "These grants demonstrate the FAA and ADOT's recognition of Falcon Field's importance as a leading general aviation airport."

Going beyond simple improvements, these injections of cash represent an investment in Falcon Field’s future as a primary transportation fixture. Inspections have backed up the necessity to upgrade the West Airport Service Road and other airfield structures to keep pace with growing airport traffic and activities. These improvements will ensure the airport can continue serving the needs of its diverse user base, from solo pilots to burgeoning businesses.

With shovels set to hit the ground on the new Taxiway I and Runway 22L holding apron design work coming in November 2025, the timeframes have been clearly mapped. March 2026 is the expected completion date for these designs, Mark Gibbs, Airport Project & Operations Manager, told the City of Mesa. He added, "We're grateful for the federal and state support that enables us to proactively invest in infrastructure upgrades and plan for future capacity." Following these, the revamp designs for the West Airport Service Road, along with the taxiway connector and apron taxiway, are also slated to wrap by spring 2026.
