In a case that has rattled a community in Fayette County, a couple has been taken into custody after their five children were found living in what police have described as "deplorable conditions." The children, whose ages range from five to 14, were discovered in conditions lacking necessities, such as beds and adequate food, and faced confinement within their own home.
Officials from Pennsylvania State Police were called to the scene after receiving a complaint about the living situation at the Kahl residence on Willis Avenue in Redstone Township, WPXI reported; upon arrival, they found the house had boarded up windows and feces on the bedroom walls, and the children were trapped in their rooms throughout the day and all night as the door to their bedroom was locked from the outside with three deadbolt locks. A search warrant executed on the property led to the recovery of a stun gun, a replica pistol, surveillance equipment, drugs, and drug paraphernalia, confirming the grim suspicions of maltreatment.
The parents, identified as 65-year-old James Russell Kahl and 41-year-old Carly Kahl, are facing multiple charges, including endangering the welfare of children. According to authorities, the room the children were confined in functioned as a "dungeon," complete with video cameras that were hardwired to the father's room, a chilling detail that adds to the severity of the case. Following their removal from the home, the children were placed into the care of CYS, where they remain as the investigation continues, CBS News reports.
During a search of the home, alongside the disturbing findings, a criminal complaint has alleged that James Kahl smoked marijuana all day and neglected the children. Furthermore, he is accused of instructing Carly to use a taser on one of the children as a form of punishment.
The father is also charged with recklessly endangering another person, use of an incapacitation device, aggravated assault, and drug charges.
